Pedestrianisation of St. George's Street |
Work is continuing on the pedestrianisation of St. George's Street, and the area immediately surrounding the Playhouse should be finished soon. St. George's Street has now been reopened from the Colegate end. Cars can approach from Colegate to drop off passengers outside the Playhouse, and can turn opposite the theatre. The bridge will be permanently closed to most traffic from now on. If you are bringing a party in a coach or driving a large delivery vehicle, please call the Playhouse office on 01603 612580 for the latest advice. Watch this space for updates as we have them from the contractors undertaking the work. Thank you for your patience. |

| The Playhouse has earned a reputation for presenting the best of comedy, drama, music and dance available. Since opening twelve years ago, we have hosted shows by a wealth of comedians, including Eddie Izzard, Al Murray, Dylan Moran and Dave Gorman, not forgetting Ross Noble, Omid Djalili and Rich Hall. |
| International and national jazz stars such as Stacey Kent, Courtney Pine, Claire Martin and Barb Jungr regularly visit. National touring drama comes from wonderful companies such as Kaos, Red Shift, Alibi, Ridiculusmus, Frantic Assembly and the National Theatre. |
| Celebrity nights have included Germaine Greer, Clive James, Susannah York, Dillie Keane, Sir John Mortimer, Tony Robinson, Prunella Scales and Janet Street-Porter. The Playhouse presents shows ranging from One-Man Star Wars through to Circus of Horrors! |
Details of all shows are in what's on in the main menu above |
| We also have a great bar – likened to a down town New York café with real ale and organic wine, an award winning garden by the river and visiting local exhibitions in two galleries. Come and see! |
